I have lots and lots of questions!!! Please help

1. Yes, you need to have a minimum of ten posts before you can message though.

2. No, they don't mail roleplay...whatever that is...

3. I would would recommend that you roleplay with a story that entails a genre of your liking, the people on this site vary on level of experience. I can neither judge nor recommend who to roleplay with. Just follow where your genre(s) take you.

4. It's both actually. There's a giant page called the Multiverse where a lot of people are locked in eternally dynamic stories. However, there are standalone roleplays, which have their own pages. Just click on the "Home" tab up top, then scroll down, and click on a title. There, you will see the page itself, which has the Introduction, Characters, Locations, Activity/Posting (i.e. posts and In-Character,) Chat, and OOC (Out-Of-Character) tabs that belong singularly to that roleplay.

String of Iraq car bomb blasts kill at least 17

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A string of car bomb blasts targeting mainly police checkpoints killed at least 17 people across Iraq on Sunday, police and hospital sources said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Violence in Iraq has eased since its height in 2006-2007 when sectarian fighting killed thousands of people, but Sunni Islamists and an al Qaeda affiliate still launch regular attacks, seeking to undermine the Shi'ite-led government.

The most deadly explosion took place in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, where bombs in three parked cars went off separately, killing eight people and wounding 22.

A suicide bomber in a car blew himself up in the city of Kut, 150 km (95 miles) southeast of Baghdad, killing four policemen, police and local officials said.

In Baghdad, a parked car bomb killed two people in a northwestern district. Another blast near a public market in Khan Bani Saad, 30 km (20 miles) northeast of the capital, killed one civilian and wounded several policemen.

Two more policemen were killed when a car bomb went off in the town of Balad Ruz, 90 km (55 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

Thousands pray for US at 'America for Jesus' rally

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Thousands of conservative Christians gathered Saturday on Independence Mall in Philadelphia to pray for the future of the United States in the weeks before the presidential election.

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins topped a full day of speakers at "The America for Jesus 2012" prayer rally.

Robertson, a former Republican candidate for president, called the election important, but didn't mention either major political party or candidate by name.

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheists say. This nation belongs to Jesus, and we're here today to reclaim his sovereignty," said Robertson, 82, who founded the Christian Coalition and Christian Broadcasting Network, and ran for president in 1988.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

"We pray that his eyes will be open to the truth," Perkins said.

A number of event organizers, though, have been vocal critics of the Democratic president.

Steve Strang, the influential Pentecostal publisher of Charisma magazine, which was distributed at the rally, recently wrote in a blog post that America is under threat from a "radical homosexual agenda." He also said Obama "seems to be moving toward some form of European socialism."

And speaker Cindy Jacobs has blamed a mysterious Arkansas bird-kill last year on Obama's repeal of the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell," which allows gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

GeckoSystems Receives Independent, Third Party Mobile Robot ...

CONYERS, Ga., Sept. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- GeckoSystems Intl. Corp. (Pink Sheets: GOSY | http://www.geckosystems.com) announced today their growing collaboration with ZMP, a premier Japanese mobile robot company, continues after a satisfactory evaluation by ZMP of GeckoSystems' SafePath? software on one of their BaseBotsa. The results of this third party validation were positive, making it an important step in solidifying this international partnership.? For fifteen years GeckoSystems has dedicated itself to development of Mobile Robot Solutions for Safety, Security and Servicea.

This joint press release (below) was distributed by ZMP on September 24, 2012:

Business collaboration between ZMP and GeckoSystems: Report No. 2

This will involve technology exchange and joint marketing of autonomous mobile robots and next generation mobility. We have successfully completed our technical evaluation of GeckoSystems' autonomous mobile robot.

ZMP Inc.? (Bunkyo-Ku, Tokyo, CEO: Hisashi Taniguchi, ZMP) and GeckoSystems International Corporation (Georgia, CEO: Martin Spencer, GSIC) announce that ZMP has successfully finished the technical evaluation of GSIC's basic technology robot platform "BaseBot" (nicknamed "Lou").

In our first press release, ZMP and GSIC announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding concerning technical exchange and joint marketing efforts in Japan, the United States and internationally.? We are now moving forward to negotiation of project collaborations.? The first phase of the collaboration was ZMP's technical evaluation of GSIC's basic technology platform the "BaseBot."?? BaseBot is a wheeled robot platform about 100cm in height that uses Kinect-type depth cameras as external sensors.? The BaseBot is equipped with the basic hardware and software required to operate an autonomous mobile robot.? The software of the BaseBot was high quality and had a fully developed configuration interface required to apply this technology to autonomous mobile service robots. GSIC's line includes its flagship model, the "CareBot" that uses the sophisticated navigation of the BaseBot and a more advanced user interface. Since the CareBot is mainly used for assisted living for the elderly, which is a promising market in Japan, ZMP intends to actively promote these products. The goal of both companies is to develop mobile service robot technologies and products that will enable people around the world to live a more independent, safe, and comfortable life.

Here is the ZMP's PR in Japanese:

http://response.jp/article/2012/09/24/181870.html

In April GeckoSystems shipped their BaseBot, "Lou", to ZMP for this critical, independent third party evaluation. As was expected, the international shipment took time due to the necessary paperwork for the robot to clear customs and finally reach the offices of ZMP. Once the robot was unpacked, ZMP assigned a multi-lingual engineer to learn how GeckoSystems SafePath software operated using the BaseBot.? This engineer communicated regularly with Mr. Spencer, GeckoSystems' CEO, and Hajime Yasumatsu, GeckoSystems' US representative. Through those communications, instructions were given and minor adjustments were made. All parties were pleased when "Lou" was able to demonstrate the company's automatic self- navigating software flawlessly, just as the company had been able to do in their own R&D laboratory and in public venues in the US.

In October, 2011, Mr. Hajime Yasumatsu, Chairman, Yasu, Inc. secured a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between GeckoSystems and ZMP: http://www.geckosystems.com/investors/press_releases/20111123_ZMP_MOU.php

Shortly thereafter, in December, 2011, a formal partnership with ZMP was announced:
http://www.geckosystems.com/investors/press_releases/20111213_ZMP_about.php ?

In March of this year, ZMP received the first "technology transfer" from GeckoSystems

Detailed Information on the BaseBot:?
http://www.geckosystems.com/markets/BaseBot.php

"ZMP's association with Hirayama & Company Patent, Design & Trademark Attorneys will help us to bring our mobile robot solutions to market in a timely and efficient manner while maintaining full ownership of all related Intellectual Property.? Our Asian business development consultant, Mr. Hajime Yasumatsu, has been key in securing this breakthrough relationship with ZMP of Japan.

"I am very pleased with this positive third party evaluation from ZMP that they conducted in their private R&D lab. We have been searching for a strategic partner who is reliable, competent, and who would respect and honor our ownership of our numerous intellectual properties that comprise our mobile robot solutions. We now have further, indisputable evidence for our belief we have found that partner in ZMP.?

"The development of our proprietary software has taken a long time and I would like to thank all those who contributed in this significant achievement. I would also like to thank our loyal stockholders who have stood with us during this R&D phase. I believe GeckoSystems is about to enter a new era of being a profitable Emerging Growth company," concluded Spencer.

About ZMP:

ZMP has an outstanding record of innovation and co-operation within the robotics community. ZMP was born out of the Kitano Symbiotic Systems Project, which was sponsored by the Japanese government to push technology forward. ZMP collaborates regularly with Japanese Universities and Technological Institutions and provides robotic teaching tools

In 2008 ZMP began a collaborative effort with three other Japanese companies, Business Design Laboratory (BDL) Nagoya, Vstone Co. of Osaka and Tmsuk of Fukuoka.? The purpose of this group effort was to improve the competitive position of Japanese robotics in the face of the Korean government's strong government support of the robotics industry.? These four Japanese companies joined together for cooperative research, development and marketing of next generation robotic applications for home and consumer use.

About GeckoSystems:

GeckoSystems has been developing innovative robotic technologies for fifteen years.? It is CEO Martin Spencer's dream to make people's lives better through robotic technology.

An overview of GeckoSystems' progress and accomplishments containing over 700 pictures and 120 videos can be found at http://www.geckosystems.com/timeline/.

These videos illustrate the development of the technology that makes GeckoSystems a world leader in Service Robotics development. Early CareBot prototypes were slower and frequently pivoted in order to avoid a static or dynamic obstacle; later prototypes avoided obstacles without pivoting.?? Current CareBots avoid obstacles with a graceful "bicycle smooth" motion.? The latest videos also depict the CareBot's ability to automatically go faster or slower depending on the amount of clutter (number of obstacles) within its field of view.?? This is especially important when avoiding moving obstacles in "loose crowd " situations like a mall or an exhibit area.

In addition to the timeline videos, GeckoSystems has numerous YouTube videos. The most popular of which are the ones showing room-to-room automatic self-navigation of the CareBot through narrow doorways and a hallway of an old 1954 home.? You will see the CareBot slow down when going through the doorways because of their narrow width and then speed up as it goes across the relatively open kitchen area.? There are also videos of the SafePath(tm) wheelchair, which is a migration of the CareBot AI centric navigation system to a standard power wheelchair, and recently developed cost effective depth cameras were used in this recent configuration.? SafePath(tm) navigation is now available to OEM licensees and these videos show the versatility of GeckoSystems' fully autonomous navigation solution.?

The company has successfully completed an Alpha trial of its CareBot personal assistance robot for the elderly.? It was tested in a home care setting and received enthusiastic support from both caregivers and care receivers.?? The company believes that the CareBot will increase the safety and well being of its elderly charges while decreasing stress on the caregiver and the family.

Gecko Systems is preparing for Beta testing of the CareBot prior to full-scale production and marketing.?? CareBot has recently incorporated Microsoft Kinect depth cameras that will result in a significant cost reduction.

Kinect Enabled Personal Robot video:

Above, the CareBot demonstrates static and dynamic obstacle avoidance as it backs in and out of a narrow and cluttered alley.? There is no joystick control or programmed path; movements are smoother that those achieved using a joystick control.? GeckoNav creates three low levels of obstacle avoidance: reactive, proactive, and contemplative.? Subsumptive AI behavior within GeckoNav enables the CareBot to reach its target destination after engaging in obstacle avoidance.

Burnt money, campus ban: Tidbits on Colo. shooter

FILE - This file photo provided on Sept. 20, 2012 by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office shows James Holmes. FILE - This file photo provided on Sept. 20, 2012 by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office shows James Holmes. Holmes, the suspect in a deadly movie theater attack in Colorado, threatened a professor before the shooting, leading the university to ban him from campus, prosecutors said in court documents released Friday, Sept. 28, 2012. (AP Photo/Arapahoe County Sheriff, File)

(AP) ? The suspect in the Aurora movie shooting case mailed "burnt currency," along with a notebook, to his psychiatrist before the attack. He threatened a professor and was banned from a university campus before withdrawing from its neuroscience graduate program. His defense team has added a psychiatrist.

Those were the few tidbits of information in hundreds of pages of heavily-redacted court documents released Friday, which serve as the best chance the public has to understand what happened before James Holmes allegedly opened fire at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie more than two months ago.

The documents shed little light on Holmes' possible motives or whether the university ignored warning signs about him. That's partly because Arapahoe County District Judge William B. Sylvester continued to keep under seal the key documents in the case ? the affidavit that lays out prosecutors' case against Holmes, and the search warrants that allowed them to gather evidence against him.

Holmes, 24, faces 152 charges in the July 20 shooting that killed 12 people and injured 58 others.

Some of the documents are entirely blacked out. In others, Sylvester's rulings on legal disputes, references to years-old case law and even copies of newspaper articles are redacted, along with information about the investigation.

The documents do shed a little more light on one of the main disputes in the case ? Holmes' threats against a professor, possibly the university psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, who has testified that she contacted campus police after her last meeting with Holmes June 11. Fenton, who testified Aug. 30, said she went to police to gather more information and communicate her "concern."

She did not refer to her concern as a threat.

Prosecutors contended that Holmes was barred from campus after making the threats. The University of Colorado has said that Holmes was denied access to nonpublic buildings on its Anschutz medical campus because he withdrew as a neuroscience graduate student, not for safety reasons.

A university spokeswoman repeated that point Friday and said a gag order that Sylvester imposed kept her from commenting about whether Holmes had made any threats. The university has previously refused to comment on how it handled Holmes, citing the gag order. Before the order, university officials said their police force had no contact with Holmes and that the chief of the department knew nothing about him.

The defense team sought sanctions against prosecutors for contending Holmes had been barred from campus, arguing that the false statements could contaminate the jury pool. But Sylvester shot that down, ruling the statements were within legal bounds.

Defense attorneys issued a written statement Friday again saying the claim that Holmes was barred from campus was false and misleading.

The most legally significant disclosure Friday was the inclusion of the psychiatrist on Holmes' defense team. Holmes' attorneys have said he is mentally ill.

"This is unusual in a normal case, but not surprising in this case," said criminal trial lawyer Dan Recht, former president of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar. "Presumably he's (the psychiatrist) the one who is going to opine on whether Holmes is insane or not.

"It's a foregone conclusion that the defense will plead not guilty by reason of insanity."

Other documents likely contain new information, but are blacked out. For example, in one pleading, attorneys describe how law enforcement handled the package that Holmes sent Fenton, which was discovered four days after the attack and also after Holmes allegedly booby-trapped his own apartment.

Authorities were so worried the package was also rigged that they X-rayed it and had a technician in a protective suit open it. What investigators saw when they realized the package was not dangerous, however, is redacted. All that is legible in the documents is a reference to the package containing a notebook with a post-it note and "burnt currency."

The records also show that authorities obtained text messages that Holmes sent a classmate. The documents do not say what those texts discussed.

In court, prosecutors suggested Holmes was angry at the failure of a once promising academic career and stockpiled weapons, ammunition, tear gas grenades, and body armor as his research deteriorated and professors urged him to get into another profession. Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Pearson said Holmes failed a key oral exam in June, was banned from campus and began to voluntarily withdraw from the school.

Documents filed in the case from now on will be public, unless prosecutors or defense attorneys ask they not be released.

George Strait hitting the road for the last time

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? George Strait is getting ready to park his tour bus.

The enduring country music superstar announced Wednesday during a news conference at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum that he will embark on his final tour early next year. Strait will play 21 dates in 2013, then 20 more in 2014 on The Cowboy Rides Away tour. He plans to continue recording music and making occasional live appearances after that, but his road warrior days will soon be over.

"I just don't want to go to the point where I show up and nobody else does, you know?" Strait said in an interview before making the announcement. "It's been great. I've been doing it for 30-some odd years and I've loved it. Sometimes I've not liked it as much. And here lately it's just the walking out onstage part, that's all great. I'm still loving that. It's just the hectic part about touring and traveling and bam bam bam bam. I just feel like it's time for me to try something else."

News of Strait's retirement will come as something of a shock in country quarters. He's so entrenched in the genre he's become part of the bedrock, a landmark to be marveled at repeatedly over the decades.

The 60-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member from Texas released his first single "Unwound" in 1981, before some of today's top stars were born. Since then he's had 59 No. 1 country singles and is the only artist to score a Top 10 hit in every year of his career. All his albums have gone platinum or gold, selling more than 68 million copies.

Traditional country singer Joe Nichols acknowledged Strait's impact when he called the singer "the Rolling Stones of country music" in a 2010 interview.

And in a lot of ways, that's been true. Until now. The Stones refuse to retire from the road, while Strait has decided to do it on his own terms.

"I'm sure I'll miss it. I'm sure I will," Strait said. "How can you not after doing it for so long. It was a hard decision to make. It was tough. I've lost sleep. But I think about midway through this tour I'll realize that, yeah, I did make the right decision. It's just a part of it."

The first leg of the tour will kick off Jan. 18 in Lubbock, Texas, and end June 1 in San Antonio. Dates for 2014 will be announced later. Martina McBride will join Strait on tour in 2013.

Strait said he was nervous about whether fans will come out and see him, but that's rarely been a cause for concern over the years. His live show is one of country's top draws. He's sold more than 4.3 million headlining concert tickets since 1999, according to Pollstar, an average of more than 18,000 per performance.

He said one of his most memorable performances was his last-minute replacement of Eddie Rabbitt at the 1984 Houston Rodeo in the Astrodome: "He just happened to get a case of laryngitis, which was a stroke of luck for me." And he also fondly remembers opening for Willie Nelson in those early years: "I opened for Willie at a fair one time and we were right in the middle of our set and the crowd just starts going crazy and I'm thinking, 'They're really liking this stuff.' I look behind me and Willie's bus is pulling up."

It's been a long time since Strait opened for anybody, and he can count most of today's major stars among the myriad who have opened for him. Yet he admits, he sometimes still gets that indescribable feeling you get when you walk out on the stage.

"It's just amazing the energy that you feel," Strait said. "I'd say three years ago we played in my hometown of San Antonio for 55,000 people at the Alamodome and walking out there with a crowd like that is just, you're excited, you're scared. There are just so many emotions going on. I still get nervous for things like that until after I sing about the first one or two songs, then I settle down. To try to describe what you feel, it's just a big electric energy feel that's right on top of you."

Strait says he knows he'll miss that feeling, and he reserves the right to return to the road if he wants. But Wednesday he was feeling comfortable with everything.

"I hope people show up because we're going to a lot of the places we've been to for so long, from year to year, and it's kind of like saying goodbye to that," he said. "It's going to be a little emotional."

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? A gunshot rang out at an Oklahoma junior high school before classes began Wednesday, terrifying teenagers who feared a gunman was on the loose.

Soon, though, students learned no one else was in danger. One of their eighth-grade classmates had taken his own life, shooting himself in the head with a handgun in the hall, authorities said.

"Throughout the entire thing, we all thought someone shot someone else," said student Paiton Gardner, 14. "We didn't know it was a suicide. We were freaking out."

Some students bolted outside Stillwater Junior High. Staffers quickly locked down the building and evacuated the rest of the school's 700 eighth- and ninth-graders, along with students from an adjacent elementary school, police Capt. Randy Dickerson said.

Dickerson said the 13-year-old didn't leave a note, and authorities said they don't know why he killed himself. Superintendent Ann Caine, who oversees the district about 70 miles west of Tulsa, said there weren't any reports that the teen had been bullied.

"There is no indication that that's what occurred," Caine said. She said the teen was a good student who got along with other kids.

About 120 people attended a vigil Wednesday evening at Highland Park United Methodist Church.

Hana Sumpter, a 14-year-old eight-grader, said she was friends with the boy and was standing nearby when the student shot himself.

"I heard the gunshot. I turned around and he was on the floor," Sumpter said, adding that he had given no indication of problems beforehand.

The Rev. Derrek Belase led the group in prayer. Members of the student's family did not attend the service.

Police wouldn't say where the weapon came from or how the eighth-grader got it into the school. Caine said there aren't any metal detectors but expects there will be discussions about the policy.

Gardner said she realized something was wrong early Wednesday when students began to run past her.

"People looked terrified," said Gardner, a ninth-grader. "The football coach was like, 'Get out, get out! Someone's been shot.'"

She and other students sprinted down the hallway, passing blood on the wall and floor as she ran to a nearby playground.

Another ninth-grader, Jake Green, said he heard the single shot ring out after he and dozens of other students gathered to pray before school.

"We heard this loud boom and everyone just got quiet," Green said. "No one said a word."

A teacher told the students to get out of the building, Green said.

"Everyone was really scared. We didn't know if the kid shot himself or if there was a shooter outside the school who shot in," Green said. "Everyone didn't know what was going on, so they were screaming and running as fast as they could to get to the playground."

Some students wore superhero costumes Wednesday as part of an effort to raise cancer awareness, but Dickerson said the student who shot himself didn't appear to be dressed up.

"If was wearing a costume, it wasn't evident to me," Dickerson said.

Green said students who were already in their classrooms were locked in the building for about an hour. Parents were told to pick up their children at a nearby shopping center.

"It was really scary," Green said. "Everyone's kind of traumatized and doesn't know how to act or respond."

Kenny Monday told The Associated Press that his son, Kennedy, heard the gunshot but did not witness the shooting.

"It's so sad that the kid lost his life, but we're just glad he didn't shoot anyone else," Monday said.

Pregnancy generates maternal immune-suppressive cells that protect the fetus

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? A new study published online in the journal Nature suggests it might be possible to develop vaccines to prevent premature birth and other pregnancy complications. If so, such vaccines would be the first intended to stimulate the subset of regulatory CD4 T cells that suppress the immune response.

Current vaccines are specifically designed to stimulate T cell subsets that activate the immune response.

The study, led by a researcher at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, shows the immune system of a pregnant mother stimulates cells that selectively prevent attack and rejection of fetal tissues recognized as being foreign. Importantly, these pregnancy-induced, immune suppressive regulatory T cells are retained after delivery, and rapidly re-accumulate and provide protection in subsequent pregnancy.

Successful pregnancy requires the ability to tolerate antigens inherited from the father. These antigens evoke an immune response by the mother's immune system, which considers these antigens foreign. If the mother gets pregnant again, these T cells remember the first pregnancy and provide additional protection to the fetus from being attacked by the mother's own immune system.

"We show definitively immune suppressive regulatory CD4 cells can form immunological memory," says Sing Sing Way, MD PhD, a physician researcher in Infectious Diseases at Cincinnati Children's and the study's senior author. "These memory features shown in pregnancy illustrate why complications become reduced in subsequent compared with primary pregnancy, but can also be broadly applied to new ways to better control the stringent balance between immune stimulation and suppression for preventing autoimmune diseases."

Way and his colleagues demonstrate that the protective program during pregnancy is established by the expansion and retention of regulatory T cells that specifically recognize fetal antigens.

"Knowing this, we can design vaccines that specifically target immune suppressive T cells," explains Dr. Way. "Current vaccines exclusively target immune activating T cells. With the polio vaccine, for example, vaccination is designed to induce long-lasting immune-activating cells that eradicate the virus with later infection. A vaccine that targets the expansion and retention of immune suppressive cells would allow selective silencing of undesired responses and prevent them from attacking the body."

Having shown that these cells can generate and retain immunological memory might make it possible to develop vaccines against autoimmune disorders -- such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis and type 1 diabetes -- in which the body's immune system attacks its own healthy tissues.

Dr. Way conducted the study in mouse models of pregnancy with colleagues from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. This research was supported by NIH-NIAID awards R01AI087830 and R01AI100934 (S.S.W.), and NIH-NIDDK award F30DK084674 (J.H.R.). S.S.W. holds an Investigator in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease award from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

Belgraders Dub New Bins a Wasted Opportunity :: Balkan Insight

The woman carrying a garbage bag approaches one of Belgrade?s newest additions ? an underground bin. Unable to squeeze her family?s trash through what seems like too small a hole - and ignoring the sticker on the side of container that reads, ?Dumping trash next to the container is prohibited,? - she leaves her bag beside the new container.

?You can only dump small bags here, as nothing bigger can go through the hole,? she complains. ?I can?t say that this was a clever invention.?

She is not the only one to complain about the city?s latest innovation in the field of waste disposal.

Many people believe that although underground waste containers in theory are cleaner and more practical than the old, above-ground bins, the newcomers clearly have their shortcomings.

In response to such complaints, Gradska cistoca, the city?s public utility company, told BIRN that the underground containers were installed with a view to improving the city?s overall hygiene.

The containers were chosen on the basis of the experience of other European cities, where they had turned out to be ?the best solution to improve hygiene and to collect waste,? the company said.

The city decided to install underground garbage bins back in 2009. Since then, about 2,000 have been put in place around town. Belgrade plans to install another 4,000 by the end of 2013.

The first tranche of 2,000 cost about ?7 million.

Gradska cistoca caused some controversy over the consortium of two companies that it hired for the job.

Blok, a Belgrade-based company, had no previous experience in this field.

Blagojevica, a firm from Mladenovac, did have some experience. But its founder, Zivko Radojicic, was the owner of several previously bankrupted companies.

Most people in Belgrade appreciate the fact that the new containers save space and are less malodorous. At the same time, many say the containers should have been designed more carefully.

?This was good idea, but it?s been poorly implemented. You cannot dump anything larger than a small bag and the bags often get stuck in the hole,? Marko, a bartender, says.

Some say the new containers don?t meet the hygienic bar, either. ?They?re better than the old containers, but they should have chosen containers that can be opened by foot, as the shutters are often dirty and it?s greasy to touch them with your bare hand,? Andrea, a pensioner, complains.

The new underground waste containers also do not contain any potential for recycling, as they are not designed for the separation of the contents into recyclable components.

Katarina Pavlovic, from Serbian Green Youth, an NGO, says that although the new containers do have advantages compared to the old, above-ground containers, they don?t resolve the root problems involved in waste collection.

?We still have an issue with waste management,? she says.

?If there is no system to allow the separation of waste and recycling, if non-recyclable and recyclable waste ends up in the same container, there are no systematic differences between the underground and above-ground containers,? she maintains.

?Thus, despite all the new investment, recycling has remained an unresolved issue,? Pavlovic continues.

Another problem with the 7-million-euro-worth investment is that the containers are permeable, although they supposed to be waterproof.

?In some locations, the water leaks in when it?s raining,? one Gradska cistoca staffer admitted.

He added that, when it rains, the Gradska cistoca teams that empty the containers need assistance from another team, which pumps water from the containers into a tank.

?In these situations, it takes much more time to empty the container,? the same worker added.

City cleaners say it is yet to be seen how the containers will withstand prolonged wet weather, as most of them were only put in place in the spring and summer, when it was dry.

Gradska cistoca declined to answer any further questions from BIRN regarding this and other quality-control issues, as did representatives of the consortium hired to produce and deliver containers.

Santos GLNG: Underground Gas Transmission ... - LNG World News

Santos GLNG: Underground Gas Transmission Pipeline Construction Starts

Construction has commenced on Santos GLNG Project?s 420km underground gas transmission pipeline from its gas fields to Gladstone.

Santos GLNG Project Pipeline Manager Greg Jones said Saipem Australia was constructing the pipeline, which was scheduled for completion in less than two years.

?Saipem Australia has started work on the pipeline in Arcadia Valley with fencing, and clearing and grading well underway,? Mr Jones said.

?Sod has been turned on around 20km of the pipeline route, and the team is now undertaking stringing and bending of the pipe.

?This represents an important milestone as it means the pipes will be lined up along the route in preparation for trenching and burying.?

Stringing involves laying pipes end to end next to the trench alignment. The pipes are placed on padded bags that are raised on blocks of wood to protect the pipe. Bending is the process that then follows to use specialist machines to bend some pipe sections to adjust for minor variations in the route and terrain.

Mr Jones said burial of the pipe was due to start in Arcadia Valley in early November and once this is completed the area is backfilled and rehabilitated.

?We are working closely with landholders to construct the pipeline to ensure they know what to expect as we work on their property. We are looking to be on a landholder?s property for a period of three to four months, dependent on weather,? Mr Jones said.

?Santos has been working with regional communities for more than 50 years and we believe in working respectfully with landholders and we expect our contractors to uphold these standards as they work on our Project.?

Pipeline work will continue to traverse north from Arcadia Valley and then turn north-east to cross the Expedition Range. Temporary camps have been built along the pipeline route to ensure workers can be accommodated to alleviate pressure on housing and accommodation in the regions.

In another milestone, Mr Jones said Santos GLNG was pleased that Australian company Thiess had been awarded the contract to construct the pipeline under the Gladstone Harbour.

?Thiess will construct a 4.3km pipeline under the sea bed crossing the narrows in Gladstone without dredging or trenching which will minimise our impacts on the harbour,? Mr Jones said.

?Thiess have advised us that this project will provide job opportunities for around 125 people and they will be using a 95 percent Australian workforce.?

The pipeline will be closely aligned with the existing Queensland Gas Pipeline for much of its length. It will start approximately 40 kilometres east of Injune and travel north up the eastern side of Arcadia Valley. The pipeline will approach Gladstone from the south west, entering the Gladstone State Development Area and cross Port Curtis between Friend Point and Laird Point.

Buick Achievers Awards 1,100 Scholarships Nationwide - African ...

NEW YORK, Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, funded by the General Motors Foundation, today announced scholarships totaling approximately $4.2 million to 1,100 recipients during the NBC News Education Nation Summit in New York City.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120924/DE79485 )

The students, who come from all 50 states, were honored for excelling in the classroom and the community. They will receive financial resources to pursue a college degree within the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), or other related fields of study.?

As one of the largest in the country, the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is noteworthy because it grants 100 students up to $25,000. The grants are renewable for up to four years and one additional year for qualified five-year engineering programs.

Additionally, 1,000 students receive a one-time $2,000 award.? By the end of 2012, the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program expects to have provided nearly $13 million to help students attend school. Eligibility was expanded this year from first-time college-bound students to include current undergraduates.

The GM Foundation hosted five of the 2012 national recipients at Education Nation, where they participated in the first-annual nationally televised Student Town Hall moderated by MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry. The students, Saad Amer; Medford, N.Y. (Harvard University); Denney Choi; Gardena, Calif. (University of California ? Berkeley); Carmen Gil; Miami, Fla. (University of Florida ? Gainesville); Thomas Jones; Orange, Tex. (Freed-Hardeman University) and Melissa Rey; Chesterfield, Mo. (Pomona College/Caltech), joined in conversations about today's educational system, sharing ideas and concerns about the rising cost of a college education.

"Students are graduating today with more than $25,000 in debt, hindering them with years of financial burden," said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard. "Through the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, the GM Foundation is able to alleviate some of those financial hurdles, while fostering the growth of the next generation of leaders for STEM-related fields."

The program comes at a time when there are less than 1,500 math and science graduates for every 100,000 employed 25- to 34-year-olds in the United States, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.? In fact, the United States ranks 27th among developed nations where college students receive undergraduate degrees in science.

This year's recipients represent every state in the nation. Additionally, 527 of the students are the first in their family to attend college while 73 recipients come from military families.?

(AP) ? The terrorism thriller "Homeland" and "Modern Family" were the top winners at Sunday's Emmy Awards in a ceremony that veered between daring and predictability in honors and Jimmy Kimmel's turn as host.

The four awards for "Modern Family" included a three-peat as best comedy series, although there was a minor backlash online as some Emmy watchers questioned whether the show had a deserving season.

"Homeland," whose four trophies for its freshman season included honors for stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis, stopped "Mad Men" in its tracks, denying the show a record-setting fifth best drama trophy.

Turns out the TV academy wasn't ready to crown the Madison Avenue saga as best ever. Instead, "Mad Men" walked away without a single statuette despite a leading 17 nominations, making it Emmy's biggest loser ever, said Tom O'Neil of the awards website Gold Derby.

Showtime's "Homeland," the cable channel's first best drama winner, also kept Bryan Cranston from his fourth consecutive best acting award for "Breaking Bad" and made "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm an also-ran once more.

"I'm one of those pesky Brits, I apologize," said Lewis, who plays an American. "I don't really believe in judging art, but I thought I'd show up just in case."

Danes, eye-catching in a bright yellow dress that gracefully draped the pregnant actress, was effusive.

"My husband, my love, my life, my baby daddy, this doesn't mean anything without you," she said to her spouse, actor Hugh Dancy.

Backstage, Danes said she particularly appreciated one fan: President Barack Obama has said he's an admirer of "Homeland," about a Marine and former POW who's suspected of working for al Qaeda.

"No pressure," the actress said. "It's way cool that he is a fan. It speaks to the relevancy of the show and it's hugely validating."

The acting trophies, along with a best writing award for the show, gave "Homeland" momentum as it headed toward the best drama award.

Kimmel, in his first turn as Emmy host, fielded some clever videos (no surprise given the famed Matt Damon-Sarah Silverman romp he inspired) but wasn't memorable on stage as the three-hour ceremony unfolded.

Aaron Paul won best supporting drama actor for "Breaking Bad."

"Thank you so much for not killing me off," Paul said of his drug-dealing character's lucky survival. "Thank you Hollywood for allowing me to be part of your group," he added, noting he'd moved from Idaho to pursue his dreams.

In a surprise on the comedy side, Emmy voters decided that "Two and a Half Men" with Jon Cryer and without Charlie Sheen is really good, as Cryer claimed the best comedy actor trophy.

"Don't panic, people. Something has clearly gone terribly wrong. I'm stunned," said Cryer, who on the red carpet before the show has expressed confidence he wouldn't win. Among others, he beat out two-time winner Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory."

Ashton Kutcher, who joined the show after Sheen was fired, wasn't nominated.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honored as best actress in comedy for "Veep."

Andy Griffith topped a segment honoring industry members who died during the previous year. Ron Howard, who played Griffith's son Opie in "The Andy Griffith Show," said he belonged "in the pantheon."

"Dang if he didn't make it look powerful easy while he was going about it," Howard said.

Phyllis Diller, Davy Jones of "The Monkees," Sherman Hemsley and Richard Dawson were among the others honored in a montage.

Earlier in the show, Kimmel dared to mock the in memoriam package that typically airs at awards shows with one showing him in various guises. Josh Groban sang a mournful "You're Beautiful" in background.

"I will be missed," Kimmel said.

Perhaps Kimmel's most notable achievement was a prank: Inviting "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan to lie on the stage, then asking viewers to post on Facebook and tweet that Morgan "just passed out" and turn on ABC right now to see it. It worked, with the message going viral and maybe even boosting the Emmy audience for a few moments.

Maggie Smith was honored as best supporting drama actress for her tart-tongued dowager in "Downton Abbey," unhurt by the program's move from the miniseries category.

"Modern Family" made it look easy as the comedy won the best directing trophy and Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen claimed supporting actor awards.

Stonestreet was funny and touching as he accepted for his role as half of a devoted gay couple.

"I wouldn't be standing here without Jesse Tyler Ferguson, there is no Cam without Mitch," he said, saluting his co-star. "We get the awesome opportunity to play these two characters on TV and show America and the world what a loving couple we can be just like everybody else."

Then he turned saucy: "I never knew I'd be on TV as a gay man, but I love the pictures of hairy chests you guys are sending me, it's really amazing. Thank you for those."

Among reality competitors, "The Amazing Race" was honored as best reality series, ninth time in 10 nominations for the award. Tom Bergeron of "Dancing With the Stars" won as best host of a reality series.

Julianne Moore's uncanny take on Gov. Sarah Palin in the TV movie "Game Change," about the 2008 presidential campaign, earned her best actress honors.

"I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down," Moore said, beaming. "Game Change" was crowned best TV movie.

Kevin Costner was named best actor for the history-based miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys," while Tom Berenger was named best supporting actor for the project and Jessica Lange won supporting actress honors for "American Horror Story."

"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" proved unstoppable, winning its 10th consecutive best variety show trophy. Stewart, discussing the lasting value of his show, apparently forgot that what flies on free-wheeling cable gets censored on network television.

"Years from now when the Earth is just a burning husk and aliens visit, they will find a box of these, and they will know, just how predictable these (several bleeps) can be," he said.

Standup comic Louis C.K. won the Emmy for best comedy writing for "Louie" and for the special "Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theatre." Said the comedian after his second win: "Thank you to audiences around the country who still go to see live comedy."

Kimmel, who played it clean, set up one of the night's best filmed comedy bits by musing on what "Breaking Bad" would have been like had it aired in a G-rated, pre-cable era.

The answer: a spoof of the opening to "The Andy Griffith Show," with "Breaking Bad" stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, fully suited up to cook crystal meth, out at the lake with their fishing poles as the "Andy Griffith" whistling theme song was heard.

As a pungent punchline, they shot dead an unexpected witness: a friendly deputy billed as co-star Don Knotts.

The show started with bathroom humor: A filmed bit with Kathy Bates, Zooey Deschanel and other nominated actresses prepping in the restroom, then discovering a weeping Jimmy Kimmel lamenting a Botox reaction he said would keep him off stage as host.

"You look beautiful," he was reassured. "You look like a 'Real Housewife.'"

Viewers of the skit may have been puzzled by a nude Lena Dunham, the creator-star of "Girls," who's routinely brave about showing skin on the HBO comedy.

Not all his material worked. One bit that fell flat had Kimmel's parents, or so the host said, escorted out of the theater because they promised he would win an Emmy and he didn't.

"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane found presenting can be tricky.

"Oh, the mic's over there," he said, after discovering he was on the wrong side of the stage. "This is what happens when you don't come to rehearsal," MacFarlane said.

Fashionistas noticed yellow was hot, the color of choice for Moore, Danes, Bowen and Hannah Simone from "New Girl."

"Best hair and makeup goes to Danes. Perfect!" tweeted Emma Roberts.

Emmy has to prove herself a winner with the audience. After rebounding somewhat to 13.5 million viewers in 2010 after an all-time low in 2008 of 12.3 million, last year's show drew 12.4 million viewers airing on Fox. The ceremony rotates annually among the four major networks.
