New drug stimulates immune system to kill infected cells in animal model of hepatitis B infection

New drug stimulates immune system to kill infected cells in animal model of hepatitis B infection

Monday, April 29, 2013

A novel drug developed by Gilead Sciences and tested in an animal model at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio suppresses hepatitis B virus infection by stimulating the immune system and inducing loss of infected cells.

In a study conducted at Texas Biomed's Southwest National Primate Research Center, researchers found that the immune modulator GS-9620, which targets a receptor on immune cells, reduced both the virus levels and the number of infected liver cells in chimpanzees chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Chimpanzees are the only species other than humans that can be infected by HBV. Therefore, the results from this study were critical in moving the drug forward to human clinical trials which are now in progress.

The new report, co-authored by scientists from Texas Biomed and Gilead Sciences, appears in the May issue of Gastroenterology. Gilead researchers had previously demonstrated that the same therapy could induce a cure of hepatitis infection in woodchucks that were chronically infected with a virus similar to human HBV.

"This is an important proof-of-concept study demonstrating that the therapy stimulates the immune system to suppress the virus and eliminate infected liver cells," said co-author Robert E. Lanford, Ph.D., of Texas Biomed. "One of the key observations was that the therapy continued to suppress virus levels for months after therapy was stopped.

The current therapy for HBV infection targets the virus and works very well at suppressing viral replication and delaying progression of liver disease, but it is a lifelong therapy that does not provide a cure.

"This GS-9620 therapy represents the first conceptually new treatment for HBV in more than a decade, and combining it with the existing antiviral therapy could be transformative in dealing with this disease," stated Lanford.

The Gilead drug binds a receptor called Toll-Like Receptor 7 that is present in immune cells. The receptor normally recognizes invading viruses and triggers the immune system to suppress viral replication by the innate immune response and kill infected cells by the adaptive immune response, thus orchestrating both arms of the immune system.

HBV damages the liver, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the third most common cause of cancer death. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up to 1.4 million Americans are chronically infected with HBV.

The World Health Organization estimates that two billion people have been infected with the hepatitis B virus, resulting in more than 240 million people with chronic infections and 620,000 deaths every year.

Engaging online crowds in the classroom could be important tool for teaching innovation

Apr. 29, 2013 ? Online crowds can be an important tool for teaching the ins and outs of innovation, educators at Carnegie Mellon University and Northwestern University say, even when the quality of the feedback provided by online sources doesn't always match the quantity.

In a pilot study that invited the crowd into their classrooms, Carnegie Mellon and Northwestern instructors found that input from social media and other crowdsourcing sites helped the students identify human needs for products or services, generate large quantities of ideas, and ease some aspects of testing those ideas.

Finding ways to incorporate online crowds into coursework is critical for teaching the process of innovation, said Steven Dow, assistant professor in Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute. He and his co-investigator, Elizabeth Gerber, the Breed Junior Professor of Design at Northwestern University, will present their findings April 29 at CHI 2013, the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, in Paris.

"Educating students about innovation practices can be difficult in the classroom, where students typically lack authentic interaction with the real world," Dow explained. "Social networks and other online crowds can provide input that students can't get otherwise. Even in project courses, feedback is limited to a handful of individuals, at most."

At the same time, tapping the power of online communities has itself become part of the innovation process, Gerber said, with many entrepreneurs turning to sites such as Kickstarter and IndieGoGo to get initial support.

"The Internet affords access to online communities to which we might not ever have access," she said. "Future innovators need to know how to find and respectively engage with these communities to get the resources they need."

Dow and Gerber have received a National Science Foundation grant to study the use of crowd technologies in the classroom. They have created a website, http://crowddriveninnovation.com/, to share ideas and resources regarding the use of crowd-based resources in innovation education.

In the pilot study, they explored the use of crowds with 50 students enrolled in three innovation classes offered by Carnegie Mellon and Northwestern. Students worked in groups of 3-4 on projects.

Students found online forums, such as Reddit, were very helpful in discovering unmet needs. A group working on public transit, for instance, found lots of people talk about transit on social media, Dow said. "It also helps them figure out what questions to ask users in more traditional interviews," he added.

An attempt to generate ideas through Amazon Mechanical Turk, which pays workers small fees for performing micro-tasks, produced little of use. "Understanding context is critical for ideation and this is difficult to do in a micro-task work environment," Gerber said. What did work effectively, she said, was asking people from the user research site Mindswarms to reflect on students' storyboard concepts.

In the final class assignment, to help students learn how to pitch ideas, the teams created a crowdfunding campaign through Kickstarter or IndieGoGo. But that made many students uncomfortable.

"The main problem with the crowdfunding piece of the class was that few students, as far as I could tell, actually wanted to raise the money," one student explained. "Most students in the class have other plans and weren't planning to continue working on their idea."

"In a strange way, this discomfort validated our hypothesis that engaging external crowds would bring the reality of innovation practices into the classroom," Dow said. "It was almost too real."

One solution, Dow and Gerber said, may be to have students prepare a crowdfunding campaign, but not launch it.

95% Blancanieves

All Critics (44) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (41) | Rotten (2)

Most films are experiences to be ignored or at best forgotten. "Blancanieves" is a little classic to be treasured.

It is a full-bodied silent film of the sort that might have been made by the greatest directors of the 1920s, if such details as the kinky sadomasochism of this film's evil stepmother could have been slipped past the censors.

Blancanieves, which won 10 Goyas (Spain's equivalent of the Oscars) and was a smash hit in its native Spain, has traces of a kinky undertone and an uncommon willingness to embrace the darkness inherent in this fairy tale.

As if bewitched, the legend of Snow White is transferred to Seville in the early twentieth century and transformed into high melodrama.

Sensuous, mischievous, hotblooded retelling of the old Teutonic fairy tale.

This gorgeous silent film is an unexpected gift from the gods of pure cinema.

A completely enchanting fairy tale about the vicissitudes of fate, in live action and glorious black and white.

The fun in the Spanish "Blancanieves" is the way it plays with our expectations.

May not have much depth to its characters or particular surprise, but its lovely depiction of family's ability to harm and mend has the flair of flamenco and the sorrow of opera.

No, "Blancanieves" isn't subtle, but it's an unforgettable time at the movies.

Inspired filmmaking steeped in the imagery of silent film history, a dark Iberian strain of Roman Catholicism and the magic of fairy tales.

... lusty and heartfelt, fiery flamenco and spirited country jig. Don't go expecting a Disney-fied fable. Berger seasons with S&M and the kind of macabre touches you'd expect in vintage Browning or Bunuel.

If not for some faintly disturbing imagery and a pleasingly feminist heroine, you could mistake this for a movie actually made in the 1920s (and even those two factors weren't utterly unknown then).

A loving tribute to European silent films of the 1920s; a reminder that cinema need not be constrained by words.

By the time the film arrives at its grand theatrical finale, you're almost prepared for Berger's last great twist. Almost.

this beautifully shot and imaginatively told fairy tale should be seen my many, but only a few will likely get to enjoy it. This is a shame for the audience it is intended for.

This film is simply gorgeous, pure beauty on film, a vision that leaves you breathless and reeling.

Much of the film's emotion is conveyed by Alfonso de Vilallonga's music, which celebrates Spain with uptempo guitar and flamenco when it isn't tipping its hat to Bernard Herrmann during a scene inspired by Hitchcock.

A visual feast, a musical masterpiece and a heartbreaking romance.

The actors are well-chosen and make you forget the lack of dialogue, especially with the artful support of Alfonso de Vilallonga's music.

The silent trappings seem like a gimmick when employed in 2013, but the story's impact is never dulled.

SKorea to withdraw workers at factory in NKorea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Seoul said Friday that it has decided to withdraw the roughly 175 South Koreans still at a jointly run factory complex in North Korea, raising a major question about the survival of the last symbol of inter-Korean cooperation.

The statement by the country's minister in charge of inter-Korean relations came after North Korea rejected Seoul's demand for talks on the factory park that has been closed nearly a month.

Seoul said it issued a Friday deadline for North Korea to respond to its call for talks because it was worried about its workers not having access to food and medicine. North Korea hasn't allowed supplies or workers to cross the border since early this month.

"We've made the inevitable decision to bring back all the remaining personnel in Kaesong for the protection of our people as their difficulties continue to grow," Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae said in a televised statement. He didn't take questions from reporters.

Ryoo urged North Korea to protect the property of South Korean companies at Kaesong and ensure the safety of South Korean managers when they return home. He didn't say when the withdrawal would take place.

Pyongyang's powerful National Defense Commission earlier said Seoul's demand for working-level talks was deceptive and that ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills and the spreading of anti-North Korea leaflets at the border were proof of Seoul's insincerity.

"This is a war of pride between the Koreas, but they are conducting it while leaving some room for talks," Lee Hochul, a political science professor at Incheon National University in South Korea, said, adding neither side is mentioning a permanent shutdown of the industrial complex.

"Once drills end and tension subsides, they may try to revive contact over Kaesong," Lee said.

An association of South Korean businessmen with factories in Kaesong released a statement saying they were shocked at Seoul's decision to pull the workers out.

The park in the North Korean border town of Kaesong is the most significant casualty so far in the recent deterioration of relations between the Koreas. Pyongyang barred South Korean managers and cargo from entering North Korea early this month, then recalled the 53,000 North Koreans who worked on the assembly lines. More than 800 South Korean managers were stationed in Kaesong before the ban.

"If they are truly worried about the lives of South Korean personnel in the (complex), they may withdraw all of them to the south side where there are stockpiles of food and raw materials and sound medical conditions," the statement from an unidentified spokesman for the North's National Defense Commission said Friday. It added that North Korea would guarantee the workers' safety during the withdrawal.

"If the South's puppet group looks away from reality and pursues the worsening of the situation, we will be compelled to first take final and decisive grave measures," the statement said.

The statements on Kaesong this week follow what had been something of a lull after a weeks-long tirade of warlike North Korean rhetoric that included threats of nuclear war and missile strikes. Tension rose as Seoul responded with its own tough language to Pyongyang's outburst, which was unusually violent, even by the standards of the already hostile relationship between the Koreas.

Meanwhile, the military drills continue. On Friday, airplanes flew over South Korea's southeastern city of Pohang and amphibious vessels landed on the coast. North Korea calls the drills, which are set to end Tuesday, war preparations.

"Even at this moment, South Korea is ramping up the intensity of coastal landing drills with the United States in the east, driving the already tense situation to a point of explosion," North Korea said in its statement. It said the annual drills and the scattering of North Korean leaflets along the border belie the South Korean government's calls for talks.

The Kaesong complex has operated with South Korean know-how and technology and with cheap labor from North Korea since 2004. It weathered past cycles of hostility between the rivals, including two attacks blamed on North Korea in 2010 that killed 50 South Koreans.

"Seoul has executed a high-stakes gambit" by deciding to pull South Korean workers from Kaesong, said Kim Han-jung, a Yonsei University professor who once served as an aide to liberal President Kim Dae-jung, under whom the idea of the park was conceived. "The deadlock over the park is likely to persist for a long time. It will take a lot of political effort to restore it."

Both analysts said that Pyongyang could confiscate South Korean properties in Kaesong in the worst scenario as it did in 2010 at a South Korean-built mountain resort on North Korea's east coast. The cross-border tourism project came to a halt in 2008 after a South Korean tourist was fatally shot by a North Korean guard at the Diamond Mountain resort.

Impoverished North Korea objects to views in South Korea that the Kaesong park is a source of badly needed hard currency. South Korean companies paid salaries to North Korean workers averaging $127 a month, according to South Korea's government. That is less than one-sixteenth of the average salary of South Korean manufacturer workers.

Pyongyang also has complained about alleged South Korean military plans in the event the North held the Kaesong managers hostage.

A South Korean employee at Kaesong said she watched the ministry's briefing on television. She did not know whether she would leave Kaesong because her company's headquarters in the South had not called her yet.

"I've been staying here to protect our factory and our goods," she said when reached by phone, declining to be identified because her company asked her not to speak to the media. She has been in Kaesong since April 2, one day before North Korea blocked entry to South Korean workers, and has been eating rice and noodles, she said. One other colleague is staying with her.

Earth's Core Far Hotter Than Thought

Semantics, yes, but you can't grade "hotness" on either the Fahrenheit or Celsius scales by a percentage; otherwise 1 degree is infinitely "hotter" than 0 degrees!

To be fair, in Kelvin this is a 19% increase, so the semantic difference seems irrelevant. To put it in perspective, though, a 20% increase from room temperature (25 C or 298 K) would be 85 C (358 K); I'm pretty sure you'd agree that's "far" hotter!

There is only one or two carriers that write black car service in NY and all of the cars are already insured by them.

The way to get started would be to get licensed. Then find a place to work that will train you properly to sell p&c.

To take the exam I used ExamFx's online program.

To get training you have to work for someone as a producer. Check on craigslist, call a few agencies in your local area, or think about going the captive route for a bit.

Ore. department's concrete police pig back in pink

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) ? The Astoria Police Department's concrete pig is back in the pink and ready for another 20 years of duty.

The Daily Astorian reports (http://bit.ly/ZPr4hW ) the pig was dropped off at the station in 1993 by someone who didn't stay to explain the gift.

Unoffended, the police promptly adopted the animal and left it in place.

But two decades took a toll, washing off the pink paint, pitting the surface, loosening the ears.

Michael Peden, the 16-year-old grandson of a department administrator, took on the restoration chores as an Eagle Scout project.

Now the department has stationed the restored pig in a more prominent location, as it said in a news release, "at the entrance to the Police Department parking area, watching the comings and goings of police officers."

Bird strain is 'one of most lethal' flu viruses

By Sui-Lee Wee and Kate Kelland

BEIJING/LONDON (Reuters) - A new bird flu strain that has killed 22 people in China is "one of the most lethal" of its kind and transmits more easily to humans than another strain that has killed hundreds since 2003, a World Health Organization (WHO) expert said on Wednesday.

The H7N9 flu has infected 108 people in China since it was first detected in March, according to the Geneva-based WHO.

Although it is not clear exactly how people are being infected, experts say they see no evidence so far of the most worrisome scenario - sustained transmission between people.

An international team of scientists led by the WHO and the Chinese government conducted a five-day investigation in China, but said they were no closer to determining whether the virus might become transmissible between people.

"The situation remains complex and difficult and evolving," said Keiji Fukuda, the WHO's assistant director-general for health security.

"When we look at influenza viruses, this is an unusually dangerous virus for humans," he said at a briefing.

Another bird flu strain - H5N1 - has killed 30 of the 45 people it infected in China between 2003 and 2013, and although the H7N9 strain in the current outbreak has a lower fatality rate to date, Fukuda said: "This is definitely one of the most lethal influenza viruses that we've seen so far."

Scientists who have analyzed genetic sequence data from samples from three H7N9 victims say the strain is a so-called "triple reassortant" virus with a mixture of genes from three other flu strains found in birds in Asia.

Recent pandemic viruses, including the H1N1 "swine flu" of 2009/2010, have been mixtures of mammal and bird flu - hybrids that are more likely to be milder because mammalian flu tends to make people less severely ill than bird flu.

Pure bird flu strains, such as the new H7N9 strain and the H5N1 flu, which has killed about 371 of 622 the people it has infected since 2003, are generally more deadly for people.

UNSETTLING

The team of experts, who began their investigation in China last week, said one problem in tracking H7N9 is the absence of visible illness in poultry.

Fukuda stressed that the team is still at the beginning of its investigation, and said that "we may just be seeing the most serious infections" at this point.

Based on the evidence, "this virus is more easily transmissible from poultry to humans than H5N1", he said.

Besides the initial cases of H7N9 in and around Shanghai, others have been detected in Beijing and five provinces. On Wednesday, Taiwan's Health Department said a businessman had contracted H7N9 while travelling in China and was in a serious condition in hospital.

Samples from chickens, ducks and pigeons from poultry markets have tested positive for H7N9, but those from migratory birds have not, suggesting that "the likely source of infection is poultry", said Nancy Cox, director of the influenza division at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

John Oxford, a flu virologist at Queen Mary University of London, said the emergence of human H7N9 infections - a completely new strain in people - was "very, very unsettling".

"This virus seems to have been quietly spreading in chickens without anyone knowing about it," he told Reuters in London.

Flu experts say it is likely that more cases of human infection with H7N9 flu will emerge in the coming weeks and months, at least until the source of infection has been completely confirmed and effectively controlled.

Anne Kelso, the Melbourne-based director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza said there has been a "dramatic slowdown of cases" in the commercial capital of Shanghai, which has recorded most of the deaths, something she described as "encouraging".

After Shanghai closed down its live poultry markets in early April, there was an almost immediate decline in new H7N9 cases, she said. "The evidence suggests that the closing of the live poultry markets was an effective way to reduce the risks."

Even so, the WHO's China representative, Michael O'Leary, issued figures last week showing that half of the patients analyzed had no known contact with poultry.

Short Covering After a Bear Attack on Gold and Silver | Gold Stock ...

It appears Goldman Sachs is covering its short on gold as it rebounds above $1400. ?Meanwhile, they have helped confuse and misdirect the investment community out of gold. ?This was a classic shakeout and bear trap which is going to start major short covering.

Be ready to see increased short covering combined with record physical demand. ?These are the elements for a price spike and breakout higher in both gold and silver. ?These markets are ready to start moving higher after basing for 2 years and having a major short attack by the big banks too big to fail and the media.

Right when gold and silver were about to gain some momentum after bouncing off key support for most of 2012, simultaneously Goldman Sachs came out with a bearish prognostication on precious metals, old Fed minutes are brought up and Cyprus says they will sell gold.? This resulted in a shakeout below $1535 and a massive bear trap for momentum traders who may have been stopped out. ?The markets will do whatever it must to confuse, misdirect and obfuscate the long term trend investor.

In my opinion, gold and silver are still below 1980 inflation adjusted highs and miners are trading at record low valuations. ?Precious metals bubble talk is gibberish. ?One should not even discuss irrational exuberance when the miners are in the midst of a ?hysterical fear which has dropped mining valuations to all-time lows. ?Until we witness new price paradigms and the consensus understands the wealth in the earth approach we are nowhere near a top.

Incidentally, these shakeouts can lead to breakouts as a major rotation occurs near the bottom and long term value investors acquire at a discount. ?Notice the increase in physical demand and thin inventories for gold and silver worldwide.

Market makers or shorts in precious metals and mining stocks are squashing every breakout and in fact using technical analysis as a contrary signal to shakeout momentum traders over the past two years. ?I have learned that these players use the charts to go against the market.

When technical signals fail repeatedly and fundamentals are ignored by the market many investors leave the arena and fold. ?This may be a ploy from policy makers to foster an environment with cheap commodity and precious metal prices to make it appear inflation is subdued. ?This would support more easy money policies to pay down soaring debts and try to boost a struggling economy.

A few weeks ago, it was discovered that the Fed sent out the minutes early to a small group of recipients which may have included Citigroup, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Barclay?s. ?Investors began to panic that the Fed would exit Quantitative Easing. ?Then I observe major banks coming out with bearish analysis saying troubled Central Banks would sell gold.? Could there have been trading based on this information?? Does this occur more often giving some Washington insiders an unfair advantage in the marketplace?

I know many of our elected officials in Washington investigating these banks are shareholders or former employees.? Its the old case of the fox running the hen house and questions the credibility of our elected officials and representatives.? Too big to fail seems like modern day cronyism reminiscent of the Tammany Hall days.

Investors are realizing that the major U.S. banks may be losing their credibility and their hold on fiat currency. ?They are hitting new highs based on government support through record low interest rates, cutting costs and creative accounting. ?We are not seeing increase of earnings or revenues from organic growth.

Unemployment remains high and inflation may be greater than many yet realize. ?Look at the move in natural gas over the past year of over 120%. ?More investors are looking into alternatives hedges in gold and silver bullion, where we have witnessed demand rising exponentially after this pullback.

When I see these Wall St. firms bearish on the yellow metal, I know the goal is to make short term profits on their record short positions before they cover.

I believe the gold bull market will recover from this short attack and continue with a breakout into new highs past $1900 sooner rather than later.? This may be an accelerated move sooner rather than later after many of the weak hands have been shaken out.? When gold and silver breakout, watch the small junior miners priced at Armageddon 2008 prices soar.? Some of these discounted junior mining stocks could see exceptional gains from these low levels.

Not only is Goldman negative on gold and silver prices but they advised clients to go short, only to cover a few days later.? This is a risky tactic in a market with a powerful longterm 12 year uptrend and goes against all textbook rules.? What is their reason?? The mess in Cyprus didn?t trigger a run into precious metals and that gold is not seen as a safe haven. ?Also they were concerned that the Fed will exit QE and that troubled Central Banks will sell gold.

To me this is short sighted analysis with the goal to stimulate panic and uncertainty on the precious metals. ?The fact remains that not one of these Central Banks sold any gold and $85 billion worth of QE is being funneled into the banks and housing sector every month. ?I believe this bear attack may indicate that Goldman and other banks may continue to cover their shorts as the weak hands sell their precious metal positions at a potential bottom.

Gold and silver may be staying down because hedge funds have a record short on them.? Goldman Sachs may be allowing these funds to cover before an eventual short squeeze which could help catapult gold and silver into new highs.? Central Banks may also be using this negativity in the precious metals market to load up before a possible breakout move.

Bloomberg reports, ?Gold Prices Tumble Most in Five Months as Cyprus to Sell Bullion?. Investors may be momentarily questioning gold as a shelter from turbulent financial weather in the short term.? Mark my words eventually they will see the intrinsic value in precious metals in a world of declining fiat currencies and soaring sovereign debts.

We may be hitting multi-year lows in precious metals and the miners.? The U.S. dollar and large cap equities may be seen as the safe place temporarily by the masses, but they are in fact possibly the riskiest assets at the moment.

The equity markets are very overbought, hitting a 15 year high. ?Bargains present themselves in the precious metals arena, which has been a store of value for 5000 years unlike Bitcoins, ETF?s, Dollars or Bonds.

It is hard to teach an old dog, new tricks.? The majority of investors remain ignorant about potential inflationary hurricanes which could hit sooner rather than later.? They would rather stick their hand in the sand and believe good times are here again.

Will I be selling my gold, silver or the miners or be going short because Goldman says so?? No way!!!? Gold is not just a safe haven from financial turmoil.? Precious metals are an alternative to fiat currencies which are losing purchasing power.

Negative real rates exist all over the world and right here where I live in the United States.? Remember cash has no intrinsic value and can be printed to infinity.? There is only so much gold and silver in the ground and in the earth.? Precious metals have real values and is the obverse of paper money and soaring debts.? Do not be surprised to see silver and gold being increasingly used as a means of exchange.

Despite the manipulated financial markets and distorted media designed to confuse simple investors, 13 states are about to recognize gold and silver coins as legal tender.? Why are the states making this move?

Historically, a country or empire that used the printing press to pay down soaring debts eventually resulted in hyper-inflation and the destruction of the fiat currency.? The U.S. is undergoing quantitative easing and debts are continuing to soar.

Interest payments on that debt are currently low due to the manipulated bond market, but that could change if investors stop buying U.S. debt.

The lawmakers from these states believe that gold and silver will over the long term keep its value.? Texas is one state that has been proactive with its sound money approach.? The Texas Retirement System owns gold and miners including one of our GST recommendations as a hedge against a dollar collapse.

I believe this trend of viewing gold and silver as real money will continue.? Investors in an environment of negative real rates will continue to seek out instruments which retains their value.

Whatever you do, don?t let the spinmeisters panic you out of your gold.? Look at these pullbacks as opportunities.? Buy silver and gold when it is oversold and when the pundits are negative.

Don?t panic about Cyprus who is forced to sell their gold to fund the bailout.? Many other countries such as China, Russia and India would be glad to buy it.

There was a time in the late 90?s and mid 70?s when Central Banks sold gold and the price dropped significantly.? This turned out to be a buying opportunity.? Nothing goes straight up or straight down, sometimes price moves sideways or backwards.? Patience and fortitude is critical during these down and flat markets.

Be careful of Goldman Sachs? forecast who tend to raise targets during tops and are negative when it may be bottoming time.? They expect a major breakdown in gold at a time when the S&P500 and Nikkei soars to record highs due to currency manipulations.

Investors supposedly are selling their gold due to Fed Minutes being released that states some officials want to end quantitative easing by the end of 2013. ? This is old news and is based on statements which did not take into account the recent poor jobs data.

The S&P500 has doubled, yet the economy is still weak according to Bernanke.? Bernanke is the one whose opinion matters most and he will continue to devalue to boost the economy through record low interest rates and quantitative easing.

Similarly, Japanese Prime Minister Abe has pledged to reverse deflation and the European Central Bank continues to boost liquidity.? All these moves will eventually cause a breakout in precious metals and the mining equities which have almost pulled back to 2008 levels, despite gold and silver being close to double the value.

International Tower Hill Mines (THM) is one of the stocks held by the Texas Retirement System who I mentioned above is looking to diversify and protect their assets by investing in precious metals and quality gold mining equities.? The institution owns over 2 million shares.

In addition, Tower Hill has an attractive roster of some of the smartest shareholders in the business including Anglogold Ashanti, Paulson and Tocqueville Gold.? This shareholder support during a difficult gold mining market is a testament to the quality of this project.

I recently spoke with Tom Irwin, who was General/Startup Manager for the world class Fort Knox Mine now operated successfully by major Kinross Gold.? He helped bring this mine to production when gold was below $350 an ounce.

Tom is an expert in cold weather mining engineering and design.? Fort Knox is located close to Tower Hill?s Livengood Project near Fairbanks, Alaska.? Tom was Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources for Alaska, which is in charge of permitting.

Tom has come out of retirement to work as Vice President of Tower Hill and is leading the work on the Bankable Feasibility Study.? His goal is to help design and permit this mine responsibly.

Tom knows how to do it.? He has a great wealth of knowledge in permitting and engineering especially in Alaska.? I recently heard Tom talk at PDAC at the ?Opportunity Alaska? symposium.? I have believed for some time that great wealth will be made in Alaska over the next generation.? There are some great producing and profitable mines in Alaska including Teck?s Pogo and Kinross?s Fort Knox Mine.? Both of these mines were advanced by key personnel working with Tower Hill at Livengood.

Tower Hill?s Livengood may be the next major gold mine in Alaska.? The 20 million+ gold ounce Livengood Deposit is located in a mining designated area, off a paved-all season highway and most important, a local and well trained labor force.

I asked Tom to discuss some of the key points in his presentation which I would like to share with you by clicking here?

LG's head-mounted display patent ensures you're always watching

DNP LG patents headmounted display, acts as visiontriggered secondary viewer

While head-mounted displays are nothing new, LG has patented a novel method for utilizing them that might grab your attention. The patent states that when you're staring at content on a device like a tablet, the HMD is inactive. But turn your head or the device away and that same content will automatically fade into view right in front of your bespectacled eyes. According to the filing, the noggin-strapped contraption is set to buzz as it switches displays and there'll be a slight transitional pause when viewing video. While we're betting virtual reality goggles and Google-branded headgear might prove to be a touch more popular, this is at least a lot cooler than passive 3D clip-ons.

SpaceX's Grasshopper VTOL rocket triples its previous best with 840-foot hop (video)

SpaceX's Grasshopper hops to 840 feet, triples its previous height record video

If it were in Aesop's fable, SpaceX's Grasshopper would probably be the ant instead, as the reusable rocket's team haven't stopped working since the 10-story craft launched back in September. It just tripled its previous altitude mark of 263 feet by soaring to 840 feet, hovering a tick, then gently landing on the exact spot it took off, all while making it look easy. Head after the jump for a video of the whole affair, which was captured rather dramatically by the company's hexacopter.
