Two grants have been awarded, totalling some ?30m. One of the grants, for ?19m will help develop new technology that makes super computers more efficient. The technology is also expected to improve battery life for devices including mobile phones, laptops and tablet computers.
A second grant of ?11m is to fund the advanced computing capability for the world's largest radio telescope. This is to allow new research into the origins of the universe.
The grants have been awarded to the Hartree Centre?at Sci Tech Daresbury and its partners.
The Treasury said that development at Daresbury is expected to create 10,000 high quality jobs across hundreds of technology companies.
"Britain is in a global race and we are in a position to lead the way in science and technology," said Osborne. "Projects like the Daresbury development are crucial to boosting the economy and putting the UK at the forefront of the big data revolution."
Science minister David Willetts said added that scientific discovery would now become data-driven.
"This ?30m investment will support one of the world's leading high performance computing software centres," he said.
"It will help ensure that UK science and industry stay at the very forefront of research and development."
