Less than a day after reports suggested?Sony would definitely ship a touch pad-equipped controller?on the PlayStation 4 release date, photos of an early controller prototype?have turned up online prior to Sony's official PlayStation 4 release date announcement.

Reports that Sony would ditch the iconic DualShock product line, due to increasingly high licensing costs for the controllers' rumble technology, first began to circulate last month. On Wednesday, a VG247 report?claimed that Sony had designed a touch pad-equipped controller which would ship alongside the company's console when the PlayStation 4 release date finally arrives later this year. Only 24-hours later, a photograph has emerged?which allegedly shows the next PlayStation controller connected to what we can only assume to be an "Orbis" dev kit.

According to Destructoid's latest update, the PlayStation 4 controller pictured in the photo is real, but multiple sources told the site that the controller is only a prototype. Which is probably good, considering the pictured controller clearly has requires a wired connection, a step back from the Bluetooth-equipped DualShock 3?that's currently bundled with the PlayStation 3. Surprisingly, the prototype doesn't look all that different from several of the mock-ups recently created by NeoGAF users.
Responses to the prototype controller photograph have been wide-ranging thus far, with seemingly just as many people ready to criticize the changes as are hailing the early PlayStation 4 controller's design.
It's unclear what changes, if any, have been made to the PlayStation 4 controller since the photo was first taken, but previous rumors have suggested the arrival of a controller that looks much like the one in the photos leaked today. Hopefully that means that ugly blue bar and extra bulk will disappear before the PlayStation 4 release date?arrives later this year.
