Melton takes up fight against diabetes - Health - News - Melton Leader

MELTON residents are being proactive in the fight against diabetes, taking up an array of opportunities to reduce their risks.

Due to popular demand Melton Waves Leisure Centre has launched a second Lift for Life program.

Organised as part of the Federal Government's Healthy Communities Initiative, Lift for Life is a strength resistance training program for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Centre manager Tim Free said with type 2 diabetes on the increase, the centre wanted to offer a program that would help prevent, manage or even reverse the condition.

"The program provides a great starting point for so many people and is one of the reasons why it has been so popular," he said.

According to the Australian Diabetes Council, in Australia, one person is diagnosed with diabetes every seven minutes.

Fitness Australia chief executive Lauretta Stace said Melton Waves was playing a vital role in improving the health of their community.

Lift for Life sessions at Melton Waves are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11.30am-12.30pm.
