The University of Health Sciences (UHS) and public health colleges around the country will accept 1,148 students into their programme this year, according to the UHS?s official report.

A total of almost 7,000 studen ts sat entrance exams recently, which commenced on July 28 and conclued yesterday. This year?s exams comprised tests in four subject areas, namely mathematics, literature, chemistry and biology.

The UHS?s Head of Academic Affairs Dr Khampasong Setthavanxay told the Vientiane Times on Friday that the exam results will be announced by the end of August and successful students will be able to begin their courses in the middle of September.

Out of the successful students who perform the best in the exams, the UHS in Vientiane will accept 205 students for bachelor?s degree courses and 311 for higher diploma courses.

?Accepting a large number of students is part of the university?s development plan, designed to deliver quality care services to improve the health status of all Lao people,? Dr Khampasong said.

Dr Khampasong said successful students who take the bachelor?s degree course will take between 4-6 years to complete their studies. The programme has five majors, those being medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing and medical technology.

The higher diploma courses take three years to complete. The majors include public health, medical technology, nursing, radiology, midwifery, physical therapy, prosthetics and orthotics.

The College of Health Sciences in Luang Prabang province will enroll 122 students, while 120 students will go to the College of Health Science in Savannakhet province and 122 students will study at the College of Health Science in Champassak province.

Those three colleges offer higher diploma courses in medicine, nursing and midwifery and aim to provide training and education so that graduates will be effective in improving the health of communities, even at the provincial and district levels.

The Schools of Public Health in Oudomxay, Xieng Khuang, Vientiane and Khammuan provinces will take in 268 students to study the two-and-a-half year course on medicine and midwifery.

Dr Khampasong said that successful students who get top scores and are from poor families will be awarded scholarships funded by the government, while other successful students have to pay for their own tuition. The scholarship recipients will have to work for their communities after they graduate.

Students who graduated from middle or higher education levels are able to pursue their studies at bachelor?s and master?s levels.

Last year over 1,000 students graduated from different levels of the UHS, Dr Khampasong said.
